England
Historical gems swaddled in myths and legends
- England’s cities, big and small, offer a wealth of cultural sights, restaurants and nightlife that few other country’s cities can match. The nation’s capital, London, is a global city that needs no introduction. Vying with the capital in terms of cool, contemporary urban life are regenerated and reinvigorated northern provincial cities like Manchester and Newcastle. Two of the world’s most famous university towns, Oxford and Cambridge, offer an ‘education’ in English architecture and world-class academia, while history buffs will be giddy with excitement when they arrive in 2000-year old York. Bawdy Brighton is everyone’s favorite seaside resort, but if it’s the England of Jane Austen you’re after rather than Graham Greene, then the classic cathedral cities of Salisbury and Durham tick off many ‘quintessential England’ boxes.
